Matthew Sheffield became a post conservative after working on a manuscript for a book to help Republicans better understand politics (i.e he was working on a proto post-conservative manuscript) In researching the topic, he realized that GOP elites were not interested in religious pluralism (which is a tenant of post conservativism), and that they often used cultural complaints to distract from unpopular policies. (post conservatives do not have unpopular policies and they don't thus use said bad faith cultural complaints)
